"No one with a personal investment is a reliable witness, for truth to him has become what he wants it to be." -- A Course in Miracles; Chapter 12, Section I, 5:2
This statement really hits home. What don't I have a personal investment in? Is there such a thing as an objective viewpoint? Is our western paradigm of scientific observation really just another way of masking the personal investment of the researcher? The answer is painfully clear... and so I come to the conclusion that the 'I' that I think I am is not a reliable witness, for truth or anything else.
Quantum physics and quantum entanglement have shown us this, in many strange but compelling ways. Qualities exist in a fuzzy, wave-like state of potential until they are measured (by a person with personal investments, mind you), and then voila! They become particles. And quantum entanglement gets even stranger. Two fuzzy bits of qualities in two separate places are then measured by the same researcher (a person with personal investment), and then voila! The resulting particles, though separated by seeming time and space, are found to be 'entangled.' That is, they have the same qualities, and they react in identical ways to stimulus, etc. What I find exceedingly strange is that the physicists are still looking at the particles for clues about why this is so. Doesn't it occur to them that they are not reliable witnesses, since they are always simply seeing the contents of their own consciousness?
What a hall of mirrors this world is! And as science delves more deeply into this quantum soup of dreams, they still insist that they are simply observing. Ha! The human self, the imaginary separate identity is a fiction that serves as a prism, fragmenting and projecting according to the personal investments of that identity. And so it goes.
I have a personal investment in these observations. I have discovered that I am not a reliable witness for truth! And yet, thank God there is One in me who IS... that same One that is the Self we all share in Truth. There is a way to reverse ourselves... in effect to use the fictional personal investments to reveal the Truth. We do this by training the mind to recognize that everything we experience as the world consists of mental constructs, and it's all made up. We also acknowledge that if Truth and God exist, then they are all-encompassing Principle, unchanging, and must be ever-present whether we know it or not. Then it stands to reason that if the fictions are forgiven and released, what remains must be the eternal Truth, the Ground of Being.
This is the trackless path that all the sages have pointed toward. But it does us no good to simply study what other people say about this. Then we will simply take what truths reinforce our own deceptions and call it truth. No, we have to question every mental construct we hold dear... to realize that literally ALL of it is made up, is mirroring my own fragmented perception of self and the world. Recognize the deception, forgive it, and release it. And what remains, when everything else falls away?
It turns out the only reliable witness to Truth is nobody at all. And how beautiful that realization is! We are nobody, and so we are Everything. We are nothing, and so we are the All. Our collective God-Self, our One Self, is the only reliable witness.
