The Holy Fool

"See the Holy Fool! She doesn't give a damn. I wish I were a fool. MY GOD! I think I am!" -- Anonymous

The Holy Fool archetype has been in my face a lot lately. I do love a good laugh, and don't mind looking like a fool. It comes naturally to most of us, although we spend much of our lives fighting it. I have discovered the delicious freedom it offers. The freedom from opinions (especially my own), and the freedom from the constant effort to BE something or someone. Whew. What a relief.

One of my favorite movie characters is a Holy Fool. Johnny Depp's characterization of Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean" sums it all up when he is willing to look like a complete fool and failure as he "waits for the opportune moment." The opportune moment being whatever opening occurs... and he's willing to wait and look the fool until it does.

Learning to wait and listen for guidance regardless of appearances has been my spiritual journey this past year. Learning to let appearances be what they are, to not judge according to my own or anyone else's opinions, and to wait for the opportune moment. That moment is always a surprise, and reveals that the Holy Fool always has the last laugh... in life as well as in the movies.

Maybe there's a Holy Fool in your life... or... MY GOD! Maybe you're one, too!
